A Victory for Commonsense
11 September 2007

UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne today hailed 'another victory for the politics of commonsense'.

He was responding to the announcement from acting Social Development Minister, Steve Maharey, that the government will spend $15 million over the next few years to get speedy medical treatment for people on the invalids' benefit so they can get back to work faster.

"Clearly, in order not to upset people already on a waiting list, the District Health Boards will have to purchase services from the private health sector," said Mr Dunne.

"This is an excellent idea that UnitedFuture has been pushing for years and we're pleased to see the Government has adopted the policy.

"It has never made sense that people wait years for health services the public sector cannot provide but which are readily available from the private sector.

"This new plan will not only take people off the waiting lists, but will also enable them to get back on their own feet and find work and financial stability," said Mr Dunne.
