Dunne: Fitzsimons’ resignation a big blow to Greens – 2009-02-23 11:21:11.558

Jeanette Fitzsimons’ departure as Green Party co-leader in June will be a loss for New Zealand as well as the Greens, UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne said today.

“There is no question that we have had our political differences over the years, but I have always respected her integrity, and the passion she felt for the causes she espoused,” Mr Dunne said.

“Even if one didn’t agree with everything she said, her voice was an important and articulate one to have in debates on the environment.”

He said that in many respects Ms Fitzsimons was the “environmental heart” of the Green Party, and it would have a very difficult job replacing her.

“The reality is that both the contenders for the position, Sue Bradford and Metiria Turei, are far more about social activism than they are about the environment, and can only really take the party further in that direction, and effectively away from its green roots.

“Jeanette Fitzimons’ departure from the leadership is a huge blow to the Green Party as a green party,” Mr Dunne said.

Ends.
