UnitedFuture will support revised ETS legislation – 2009-09-15 09:29:40.263

UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne says he will support the introduction of the Government’s proposed revised climate change legislation.

UnitedFuture had not supported the previous Labour-led government’s legislation because it placed too high a cost on households and families.

Mr Dunne says the revised proposals soften that blow considerably.

“Also, the modified scheme is broadly in line with the more pragmatic thrust of the Emissions Trading Scheme Review select committee’s recommendations,” he says.

However, Mr Dunne remains concerned that Labour has not yet signed up to the revised proposals.

“I understand their political chagrin, but resolving climate change issues is bigger than preserving any party’s political ego.

“I hope Labour can look beyond its political pique that National has concluded a deal with Maori Party ahead of it, and come to support the revised emissions trading scheme in the best interests of New Zealand,” he says.
