Should Fireworks be Banned? – 2007-11-12

A United Future member asked what our stance was on the proposal to ban fireworks, following a Stuff article & poll: http://www.stuff.co.nz/4259536a6482.html

Caucus hasn't yet made a decision on this issue, but will be discussing it tomorrow.
We want to know what you think about banning fireworks – so jump on the poll and make your voice heard!

To start you thinking, here are some of the pros and cons about a ban on fireworks:
For

  • Fireworks are inherently dangerous
  • They terrify animals
  • There is strong public support for a ban on fireworks

Against

  • A ban is excessive – it's the minority spoiling it for the majority
  • This is the fun-police crack-down
  • A ban is mass hysteria, public moral panic having its way, not rational thought.
  • Fireworks commemorate Guy Fawkes's attempt to blow-up Parliament, shouldn't we be pleased he failed? (hmm, perhaps this is a reason for a ban, least someone try again ....)

Tell us what you think!
