Support for Paternity Test
AUTHOR: Judy Turner
Last week hearing submissions on the Family Court Matters Bill at the Social Services Select Committee, the Law Society questioned why the government would go to the trouble of amending this Act without including their long-standing recommendation that the Family Court be able to order DNA tests to be carried out when parentage is in question.
I was thrilled as this is exactly what my Members Bill does, and it was great to hear such a reputable group signaling how important they think this issue is.
I did approach the Minister of Courts about including my bill within the scope of his amendment bill but got turned down
Why?
Who knows?
It is ridiculous that a mother can refuse to allow her child to have a simple mouth swab to determine the paternity of her child, and that the man involved can do nothing about it.
The Principal Family Court Judge is always denying that the Family Court is not biased against men. However Family Law is blatently geared in favour of women, and this is one clear example of this.
How is the best interests of a child served by this anomaly.
