Ideology putting children at risk - Turner

Police and Government policy that is based on ideology not evidence is putting children at risk and unjustly targets fathers, according to UnitedFuture family spokesperson, Judy Turner.

“Today I opened up the DominionPost to see the Minister of Police and the assistant Police Commissioner smiling and sipping coffee behind a cake which has plastic diorama models of four men, presumably fathers, assaulting and beating their children who are cowering in fear.

“I am appalled. The police with the blessing of the Minister continue to perpetuate the myth that fathers are the only perpetrators of child abuse – when the fact is that mothers are in fact more often child abusers than fathers,” says Mrs Turner.

The New Zealand study, Abused children in New Zealand/Aotearoa: Presentation and Investigation, analysed three hundred substantiated cases of abuse investigated by Child, Youth and Family Services and found that “Children are most often physically abused by their biological parents, and mothers were marginally more often the abusers than were fathers.”

Mrs Turner notes of particular concern is that “Child abuse investigators often tolerated physical assaults on children, particularly by mothers,” according to the study.

Not only do we have Section 47 of the Policing law basically saying 'if in doubt blame the bloke' when the Police turn up at a home where there is or could be a problem we have these officials denying the reality that more women are involved with damaging children at home than men!

We have a failing Labour government who wants to see 3 day Protection Orders put against people, when no evidence is forth coming! That is ridiculous. That is being 'convicted when possibly innocent"! Would you expect a speeding ticket if there was no evidence you hadn't sped & you could quantify you hadn't? Would you expect to be taken of & charged when a drink driving indicator assessed you as under the limit? Think about it folks. Something is going absolutely nuts in our Policing!

Well think about this please as this is abuse by the Police of the potentially innocent who will probably have legal recourse to over turn what will totally disrupt their lives for at least 3 days, possibly for years to come. Where there's smoke there's fire - once such orders are issued the person is assumed guilty & will have to most likely spend $2000 to $5000 in the courts to over turn them. We know men (& women) can offend but this is getting so out of kilter! Power corrupts & absolute power corrupts absolutely. To allow the Police to put in place any measure 'without evidence' to quantify it is an absolute abuse of power against what will often be entirely innocent persons, the majority males.

So section 47 - if in doubt 'blame the bloke' is being fuelled by a culture that now creates models a myth about men & violence against children. Can somebody stand up & scream "What is wrong with the Police & the Police Minister" because somebody needs to!!!

If you are going to vocally oppose sterotyping, you need to be careful that you are not guilty of doing it yourself. Saying that police are perpetuating the myth that fathers are the only perpetrators of child abuse is a very general and precise sterotypical response. Is there any police officer that genuinely promotes the idea that men are the only child abusers? That is highly doubtful. Police only have powers to enforce what is law, so if there is a problem with the law then that needs to be addressed. Police cannot take action against people without just cause, their gender is irrelevant.

The imagery on the cake may have been misrepresentational and missed the mark, but in this issue cool heads must prevail. The real issue here is child abuse and how to target the abusers. Not targeting the obvious, easy, visible choice - our police, who have a thankless, tough job. Put the issue's focus on abusers, victims, and the law, where one can hope to actually make effective change.
