Labour and Nats squabbling over crumbs of recreation

UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne is yet to be convinced that there will be any change in the management of the Department of Conservation despite the leak of National’s conservation policy today

“It seems as though both major parties are squabbling over a few crumbs amounting to a false commitment to recreation,” said Mr Dunne.

UnitedFuture is particularly concerned at the attitude of DoC towards recreational users such as large game hunters and fishers. As a consequence, I want to ensure that the Department is required to consult with all relevant stakeholder groups in a fair, balanced and transparent way.

I like this policy a lot- particularly since we are now a nation where recreation is proving an important tourism drawcard.Outdoor walks etc add so much more to this country.

Perhaps we should really be calling the Department of Conservation - "Environmental Protection and Development" (EPD) Conservation is an outdated connotation.

And on the matter of 1080:

QUOTE: ...Although we are supportive of most current pest control methods, United Future is generally opposed to the aerial application of 1080 unless it is proven beyond
reasonable doubt that the terrain in the treatment area is such that it would be impossible to carry out a successful ground baiting operation....UNQUOTE

I had a very interesting conversation with a respected Ecologist in the Coromandel who said 1080 is not that toxic- its just indiscriminate when it comes to killing pests. that is it kills everything- not just the opposums on their own. So aerial drop is not a very good use of resource and highly dangerous to protected species
