Peter, the time has come to work with the recreational fishing sector to establish a public consultation process regarding the future of inshore fisheries management. Including establishing a statutory management organisation 'run by fishers for fishers'.
The previous Labour Government instigated (at the request of the commercial fishing sector) the now implemented 'Reporting' by the charter boat fleet, which contributes nothing to the overall information gathering required to establish the state of the fishery. This needs to be repealed and instead have the Government work side by side with the charter fleet who have historically shown they are happy to voluntarily offer information. Reporting has huge potential of criminalising otherwise honest operators, with over the top and unsafe legislation requirements.
MAF & MOF have the roles of being guardians and managers the respective environments. Amalgamation cannot provide for either sector to best advantage.
