But we don't have to passively accept continued deterioration in political discourse. Politicians can play a part - but it's the responsibility of those of us on the outside to look for ways of both improving the ability to discuss issues with politicians, and improve the quality of that discussion.

There is a lot of poor behaviour and abuse, but that can be addressed if enough people stand up to it and speak out against the excesses. Online communities are like any other communities - they are as good as those taking part make them.

Public discourse has certainly detonated into shrapnel – and people vitriolic nature in language, abusing parliamentarians is uncalled for. I like debating important issues that reflect the national interest, the strategic long-term and more beneficial outcomes, issues such as Assest Sales, Crafar Farms, ETS, Age limits on alcohol purchases etc. But I think abusive talk is quite immature and if the language used by adults on blogs etc is anything to go by then, I, without apology, believe that there are a growing number of immature people, who really should think twice before opening said immature mouths.

At this juncture in our history, when adverse effects of the 2008 financial mismanagement and fraud by banks, financial investment houses, corporations dealing in exchange of money, it would be prudent to wizen up a bit and seek the knowledge slowly as how best to express what’s on your mind – intelligently. One way to do this is to ask yourself how the Media is presenting the facts on an issue: is it fair and accurate reporting or is it bias? Whose message is being put forward more and why? Is the reporting sensationalist? Why is that way -rating or hoping for a genuine debate?

While I may never set a World Record or have the world on the edge of their seat as I shoot for the finish line, I have turned down that slice of cake that has been taunting me from the refrigerator, gotten up to do a few stretches while my eyes remained locked on the screen, and have laid on the floor and counted out sets of sit-ups during commercials.
