Dunne: Huawei issue exposes price of GCSB blunders

Concerns around Chinese communications giant Huawei are of “critical importance and need to be explored but there are huge doubts about whether the GCSB can do that job for New Zealand”, UnitedFuture Leader Peter Dunne said today.
“New Zealand is now paying the price for the GCSB’s Dotcom failures. We have a crisis in confidence in what is a very important agency of the State.
“Basically, are they up to it? That is a question we have not had to ask before.
“The Huawei issue highlights the trust we now do not have in the GCSB – they have totally shot themselves in the foot,” Mr Dunne said.
He said that the concerns raised by the United States intelligence committee about Huawei are very serious, and the Government needs to treat them seriously.
“Whether we like it or not – and regardless of the many good aspects of New Zealand’s burgeoning relationship with China – they have a history of blatant intellectual property theft and are a growing military superpower,” Mr Dunne said... Read the full text of this article.

I agree with the assessment that we need to make sure our Intel Agencies can do their job.

One issue with the Dotcom case is that 'procedures' may be flawed in that over-emphasis on 'procedure', may have caused a genuine mistake.

The second most important point is indeed TRUST.

Thirdly: Any assessment of cyber threat, or any form of risk to New Zealand, in New Zealand, needs a much broader picture of what's being played down. Here is a good analysis from respected magazine Foreign Policy:

Kiaora Mr Dunne. I am so glad that at least you are aware of the Chinese and their penchant for stealing Intellectual Property.

The truth is, I really don't like to see my little whenua stooping down at the behest of a country that is so full of corruption and the Human Rights abuses they mete out to their vulnerable citizens, and especially the Tibetans.

Yes, the Chinese are one of our, if not the biggest importers for our agricultural and Dairy products, but is it worth the cost of our integrity, and our Mana and our standing on the Global Estate?

They use the FTA as a threat to get their own way.

Even local councils earlier this year came up with one excuse or another not to attend after being invited to a Falun Gong performance, except for Hutt City Council, who rang and asked for an invite. They received one.

Take no notice of Mr Peter's, he nearly had me fooled but not quite.

I changed my mind about you, when I heard what you had to say about the Nepata brothers, what you said, clearly showed you are a very caring man.

We need more MP's like you.
