Recently, members of the community and voluntary sector met with Hon. Peter Dunne in his role as Revenue Minister to discuss the establishment of changes to the tax regime for charities. Tax is a huge issue for community and voluntary sector as there are a number of anomalies that disadvantage not-for-profits. These have never been addressed despite ongoing lobbying to successive governments. The discussions with Peter Dunne generated some very positive outcomes around possible timelines and we are encouraging everyone to support United Future in ensuring that the issue of a tax rebate regime for charities is addressed in this parliamentary term, as per the coalition agreement. A coalition of community and voluntary sector organisations is also working to get the messages about these issues out to the public. There is a good basic introduction about the issues around the current tax regime and the need for rebates available on the Resources page on the COmVOiceS website:

This doesn't directly relate to a tax rebate for chairities but it's charity-related. I noticed that Telecom are changing their sponsorship deals with charities and not-for-profit organisations and that this means that charities will lose their free local calls.
Anyone else noticed this? If any charities or not-for-profits are reading this, could they comment on how they feel about this change?

I see that John Key has proposed that the rebate cap be removed.
Story here
Quote:
Mr Key unveiled his party's new tax policy on charities today, saying New Zealand's tax treatment of charitable giving was miserly compared to other countries.
Quote:
Remove the $1890 cap on charitable donations. Donations of any amount, up to an individual's total net income, would be eligible for a 33.3 per cent rebate
Sounds similar to the UF "a new tax rebate regime for charities will be developed" confidence and supply agreement goal.

I'm expecting there will be major announcements in the Budget in May which will deal with the outcome of the review conducted as part of the Confidence and Supply Agreement, and I believe they will be very received.

Extremely pleasing. Much more than I had expected.
