Voluntary

United Future supports the vital role that volunteer and community agencies play in our society. These agencies often have the expertise, networks and strong community focus to deliver services most effectively, as the Royal Commission on Social Policy found.

United Future will:

  • Ensure any proven, volunteer or quasi-volunteer agency or group that can show their work is cost effective for their community is adequately funded
  • Focus on developing a supportive and mutually beneficial partnership between Government and community and voluntary agencies.
  • Increase personal tax rebate on donations to charitable organisations from $500 to $5000.
  • Require Government departments to adopt a specific strategy for investing in the community and voluntary sector.
  • Seek to establish a participatory style of Government by ensuring that government departments keep voluntary agencies up to date with policies, and foster policy development networks with voluntary and cultural groups.
  • Establish a code of practice for community and voluntary agencies.
  • Explore effective means of encouraging greater social participation in voluntary organisations.
  • Promote civil society by establishing a national centre to identify and resource umbrella, national and networking groups.
  • Require local councils to provide a statement every three years outlining council objectives towards local groups.
  • Introduce a community volunteer rebate for those receiving the 55 plus benefit or who qualify for New Zealand Superannuation.
