| BUDGET MUST SPELL OUT A FUTURE |
|
The first budget of the Labour/Alliance Government must spell out a vision for the future which will restore business confidence and provide a vision for economic and social success says, United New Zealand leader, Hon Peter Dunne. "The Budget provides a golden opportunity for the Government to show New Zealand's wealth creators they are listening and want to work constructively to ensure ongoing economic success. "United New Zealand welcomes some of the pre-budget announcements, especially in the environment, biodiversity and transport areas demonstrate an encouraging commitment to addressing important needs in an innovative manner. "However, we believe there are other important issues the Budget must also address:
"Overall, the Government must spell out its vision for New Zealand. Much has been said about the knowledge economy and the important key to the future that it unlocks. The Budget must clearly demonstrate that the knowledge economy is more than a mere concept and provide the building blocks for putting it into practice. "The Government's strategy to close the gaps between rich and poor is laudable. United would welcome an approach that rewards initiative, encourages a move away from dependency and is genuinely committed to providing opportunities for upskilling, improved access to health services and a positive recognition of the needs of nervous business and the long-suffering taxpayer. "If the Government can provide a vision which sets out a strategy for improved performance and growth that is fair and inclusive, and embraces the best things about New Zealand, then it will have taken the most important step in moving the country's fortunes forward," concludes Mr Dunne.
