| TIME FOR CLOSER POLITICAL TIES WITH REPUBLIC OF CHINA ON TAIWAN, SAYS DUNNE |
|
It is time New Zealand and the Republic of China on Taiwan formed closer political links, says United New Zealand leader, Hon Peter Dunne. Mr Dunne was speaking at a special function in Wellington this evening to celebrate the inauguration this coming weekend of President Chen Shui-bian, as the new President of the Republic of China on Taiwan. The function was hosted by the representative of Taiwan in New Zealand, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had advised against attendance because it could be interpreted as a challenge to New Zealand's 'One China' policy. "I am extremely proud to bring you the unanimous greetings of the New Zealand Parliament," Mr Dunne told the function in a reference to last week's historic Parliamentary vote on his motion congratulating President Chen on his election. "That vote was a clear signal that the New Zealand Parliament wants closer links with the Republic of China on Taiwan, and the inauguration of the new President provides a strong opportunity to develop further the political dimension of our already strong economic and cultural links." "In many senses, the present 'One China' policy is a hangover from a bygone era, and is out of step with today's more open and globally interdependent world." "It is time for a change, and I hope President Chen's election will be the catalyst for such a change," he said. Mr Dunne called on New Zealand business and community leaders to force a change in New Zealand's policy towards the Republic of China on Taiwan by ignoring the "silly and pathetic dictates" about the form of dealings with Taiwan, in favour of much more direct and open contact. "As a vibrant democracy in our region, the Republic of China on Taiwan deserves our support, not our continued ostracism," he said. ENDS |
