17 Mar 2005 Press release
United Future leader Peter Dunne says he’s concerned that Pharmac, the Government’s drug-buying agency, is not up to the job of sourcing and supplying pharmaceuticals essential for the health of all New Zealanders.

Mr Dunne queried the Government during Question Time in the House today about Pharmac’s failed policy of getting flu vaccine from a sole supplier.

Later, Mr Dunne said, “The Minister claims he’s happy that Pharmac is flexible enough to review its own policies, but that’s just not good enough.

“There’s a bad pattern emerging here. Last year, Pharmac’s policy of sourcing drugs from a single supplier led to severe shortages of drugs to treat gout, iron deficiency, and period pain.

“Pharmac may be happy that it’s saving money on the national drug bill, but that’s little comfort to New Zealanders suffering great pain because they can’t get the required medicine.

“I have to question seriously Pharmac’s competence to do the job it’s supposed to be doing.

“Everything it touches seems to turn to dust,” said Mr Dunne.
