Peter Dunne – Anzac Day Message 2003

“Those brave soldiers who fought at Gallipoli left a legacy of unfailing courage, dedication to service and sheer determination that has become a byword for New Zealand forces ever since, as well as helping shape our character as a nation.

“The Anzac spirit has inspired New Zealand servicemen and women from World War II to Korea, from Malaya to Vietnam, and Bosnia and East Timor through to Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf today.

“It is also why so many young New Zealanders now join others in the annual pilgrimage to Gallipoli and why, so many years on, the particular events of that landing so far away still contribute so much to the spirit of our country.

“Anzac Day is an occasion to reflect on the sacrifices and the heroism of New Zealanders in the horror of war, and to recommit ourselves to peace and freedom in our country, and in all the nations of the world.    

“To our veterans and the their families we say a most profound thank you, and to them and all the fallen before them and their descendants we offer afresh the pledge that their sacrifice must never be allowed to have been in vain.”
