29 Aug 2005 Press release
The Department of Conservation is running the outdoor estate as if it were a personal fiefdom for zealots, United Futureís Larry Baldock said today in response to its refusal to let a New Zealand business rid the countryís waterways of the noxious pest, koi carp.

"Itís undisputed that koi carp are a pest. DOC would tell you that they destroy flora and fauna, and yet it stands in the way of NZ Waterways Restoration Ltd actually fixing the problem.

"Unfortunately this is typical of DOCís antics. One can only presume they are offended that this is actually a business offering a solution," Mr Baldock said.

He said the koi carp population was increasing by millions annually and DOCís own programmes are failing to address the problem.

"This kind of ideological lunacy over practical common sense outcomes only confirms United Futureís policy of restructuring DOC.

"This is an organisation that has lost its way and this is a classic example of the problem," Mr Baldock said.
