21 Apr 2006 Press release
United Future MP Gordon Copeland is encouraged that progress is being made on the issue of walking access in New Zealand in light of the release of a consultation document today.

An independent seven-member reference panel led by South Canterbury farmer, John Acland, has prepared the document. The issue refers to the public's right of walking access to areas of coastline, rivers and lakes.

“This is a step in the right direction,” said Mr Copeland. “Walking access is without doubt a sensitive issue, and the views of all sides need to be addressed. I look forward to this document facilitating that.”

According to Mr Copeland, “It is important that the public consultation process is robust and comprehensive. There are a lot of very passionate people out there whom I hope will take this opportunity to make a submission to the panel.”

“I am pleased that this consultation document has come out. It is the first step in negotiating improved public access along rivers, lakes and foreshore; a policy agreed to by the Government in the Confidence and Supply Agreement with United Future,” concluded Mr Copeland.
