Dunne welcomes legal assistance treaty with China United Future Leader Peter Dunne has welcomed the conclusion of a treaty with China on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.“Although a bilateral treaty is not required in order to make requests of, or provide legal assistance to, China, it will serve to promote greater co-operation between the two countries,” Mr Dunne said. According to Mr Dunne, “Given the number of Chinese now travelling, living and studying in New Zealand, and the increasing popularity of China as a travel destination for New Zealanders, it is likely that there will be an increase in criminal cases involving both countries.” “As well as this treaty providing the framework for further co-operation between law enforcement authorities, it will also help strengthen relations between the two countries,” said Mr Dunne. “This can only be positive for New Zealand given the growing influence of China on global politics.” Hon.
