29 May 2003 Press release
Following a day-long caucus meeting today of United Future MP’s, party leader, Peter Dunne, has outlined United Future’s position on the Supreme Court Bill, which is intended to sever New Zealand’s links with the Privy Council.

“The caucus has long held the view,” he said, “that a change of such a fundamental constitutional nature required the widest possible public consultation and debate.

“Accordingly, we opposed the introduction of the Bill when it first came to Parliament as we believed no such widespread debate had been held.

“We were subsequently successful in persuading Parliament’s justice select committee to broaden its terms of inquiry into the Bill, so that much greater public involvement was possible.

“Following that success, the caucus believes it would be illogical and wrong to determine the party’s final position on the Bill prior to the completion of the committee’s hearings.

“So United Future’s position on the Supreme Court Bill will not be finalised until the justice select committee has reported back to Parliament,” said Mr Dunne.
