Alexander: No parole for violent offenders

“A criminal with one of the worst histories around has been paroled, and now, he just walks away one evening – as simple as that. That’s how easily all these supposedly carefully crafted and thought-out parole conditions are breached.

“He simply walks away. And how is every woman in Christchurch supposed to feel today?” Mr Alexander asked.

“Carroll was supposedly closely monitored at a half-way house. Now it’s time to put him back where he belongs – behind bars.

The thinking behind the paroling of dangerous criminals was disturbingly similar to that which saw two killers have their sentences cut yesterday.

“How else can you comprehend the reducing of RSA murderer William Bell and Masterton murderer Bruce Howse’s non-parole periods?”
