Alexander: Remove drinking kids from negligent parents Parents who show no concern when their drunk children, some as young as nine years old, are returned to them by the police in the middle of the night are not fit to look after them and the children should be taken into care, United Future law and order Marc Alexander says.Speaking in Parliament today, Mr Alexander asked whether the $200 fine such parents faced was enough. And in cases where these parents either dont care about what their children are up to, or cant control them, it is not in the best interests of the children to stay in that situation, he said. He later called on the Government to extend Section 10 of the Summary Offences Act, which deals with caregivers leaving children under 14 without reasonable care, to cover children out drinking. And provisions should also be made to have CYFS automatically informed of such cases, Mr Alexander said. Ends. Mark Stewart Press Secretary Tel: 027 293 4314 |
