Auckland MPs, Paul Adams and Bernie Ogilvy, and transport spokesman Larry Baldock, put the case for the use of the base as a second airport to a receptive United Future caucus today, after visiting the airbase yesterday.

"It simply makes no sense to lose this valuable opportunity for a second airport for Auckland in the northern arena of such a large population base," Mr Adams said.

"With the traffic problems Auckland faces, and which it will have to keep addressing, a second airport serving the northern area of Auckland, and all the way up to Northland, makes good sense," he said.

Mr Ogilvy added: "Any measure which will cut traffic crossing through the city to access Mangere must be worth investigating."

"Of course, proper analysis must be done and experts need to study its viability, but there is infrastructure in place and runways are in workable condition. Also, the terminal there would be quite adequate for the first stages of a domestic and short haul trans-Tasman service," Mr Baldock said.

The three United Future MPs visited the Whenuapai Air Base yesterday with representatives from Waitakere City Council, Enterprise Waitakere and Infratil.
