20 Feb 2004 Press release
United Future leader and Ohariu-Belmont MP Peter Dunne today reiterated his call for urgent action on opening an alternative land route in and out of Wellington.

“Transmission Gully must happen and happen as soon as possible,” he said.

“We’ve now had in the space of a few months floods that are being described as ‘1 in 100 year’ events. It seems to me these hundred years are coming around awfully fast.

“Yet again, I urge the Government, Transfund and Transit NZ to lift their eyes from their long-term planning documents, take a hard look at the reality of blocked roads and floodwaters and realise that it is simply not acceptable for the capital city to be constantly cut off from the rest of New Zealand by natural disasters.

“The people of Wellington deserve better,” said Mr Dunne.
