19 May 2004 Press release
Speaking in Parliament today on the Wellington City Council (Te Aro Reclamation) Amendment Bill, Miramar-based United Future MP Gordon Copeland urged the Wellington City Council to use any proceeds from the sale or lease of Jack Illott Green to be used for the reduction of the city’s liabilities and not be frittered away on someone’s expenditure wish list.

“I express the hope that, especially in this election year, Councillors will consider the matter carefully because, just like a family or a business, it normally turns out to be a mistake, and a costly mistake at that, to sell the family jewels without an equivalent debt reduction,” he said.

Mr Copeland urged the voters, if they want to get their rates down, to vote for prudent people in selecting their new council this year and for United Future next year because the party will take the GST off rates and for once to leave some extra cash in their pockets.

“Now wouldn’t that be a welcome change!” he said.
