08 Jun 2004 Press release
United Future’s energy spokesperson Gordon Copeland today called on the gas industry to get moving with additional reticulation investment.

“Only 10% of New Zealand householders currently have direct access to natural gas,” he said.

“I know that households in the South Island don’t have access to natural gas but, more than twenty years after it became available, reticulation to households in the North Island is still very limited.  Whole areas of Auckland, our biggest city, still have no gas availablility.

“Natural gas, a non-renewable fossil fuel, should ideally be used as gas!  Much of the enormous Maui gas supply has instead been used to generate electricity: a process which is woefully inefficient.

“By contrast, gas for cooking, for showers and for home heating is a superb source of energy.  You only have to ask anyone who is using gas in those ways to hear glowing – no pun intended – reports!

“I can’t help but feel that the gas reticulators and retailers have let down New Zealand consumers badly.

“Quite frankly,” said Mr Copeland, “it’s time to get out there and market the product in every way possible.  New Zealand’s energy balance will be greatly improved if we can reduce our dependence on electricity.  Gas is a more than attractive alternative.  Action please!”
