Alexander: Christchurch pier protesters should jump The planned occupation of the New Brighton Pier tomorrow to protest at the recently passed Seabed and Foreshore Act is exactly what commonsense could have avoided, says United Future MP Marc Alexander.
“They claim to want to raise awareness of the Act and get rid of Labour MP Mahara Okeroa.
“You’d have to question their collective intelligence. For a start they should have raised the issues before the Act was passed not after. And secondly, rather than waste time and squat on a community asset to which their contribution was negligible, they should do the hard yards of organising politically and come up with a credible alternative.
“And why go after Mahara? Surely they should be venting their anger at Winston Peters without whose New Zealand First MP’s the law would not have passed!
“The spokesman of the pack, Malcolm Mullholland has been quoted as saying ‘This is just the beginning of a fight and it’s a fight the government will not win.’ But he’s dead wrong, it will be all New Zealanders who will lose.
“By all means this group can protest, because everyone has the right to do that. But what they need to do is get real and stop dividing the country…this action will do more to help fill in the application forms for all the bigots and racists who, quite frankly need no encouragement.
“If they really wanted to leave an impression, they should go out to the low tide mark and stay there,” concluded Mr Alexander.
