United Future Achievements

United Future achieved 6.7% of the party vote at the 2002 General Election. Peter Dunne was successful in his electorate of Ohariu Belmont for the 7th successive general election. Together, United Future achieved 8 MP's in Parliament.

United Future had campaigned on sensible, common sense politics, and decision making based on pragmatism, rather than ideology. United Future was determined to make a difference in Parliament, while being realistic that 8 Members Parliament of a total of 120 was not sufficient to determine the legislative programme.

After the 2002 election, United Future had a choice - leave government to Labour and the Greens and shout from opposition, OR be effective and influence government policy by entering into a confidence and supply agreement with the Labour government. In 2002 supporting a National led government wasn't an option - there simply wasn't the numbers to form a government.

United Future chose to be effective.

In Parliament United Future has consistently stood up for families as the cornerstone of our society. The evidence is convincing - strong families mean a strong community.
