UnitedFuture appoints Damian Light as new leader – Turner/Damian

UnitedFuture has appointed Damian Light as the new Party Leader, Deputy Leader Judy Turner announced today.

Mr Light will takes over from Hon. Peter Dunne, who will remain as Parliamentary Leader.

“Peter is the reason I’m involved in politics and working alongside him for the past decade has been an honour.” Mr Light said “I’m keenly aware that I have some very big shoes to fill but I also am encouraged by the support we’ve received over the past few days from candidates, members and the public.”

Mr Light has served on the party board as well as party secretary and president. He’s represented UnitedFuture as a candidate in the last four elections (2008-2017) and is currently spokesperson for Auckland Issues and Diversity.

“Running for parliament is all consuming and I’d like to acknowledge the unwavering support I’ve received from my family and boyfriend throughout this campaign.” Added Mr Light.

Under Dunne’s leadership, UnitedFuture has been a critical part of successive governments.

“Since 2002, Peter Dunne has been a main player in fleshing out how to make MMP deliver stable government for New Zealand.” Mrs Turner said. “The honouring of supply and confidence agreements through open and transparent processes between parties has seen both Labour and National-led governments able to get on with the job. All this while allowing UnitedFuture the opportunity to advance some of our own policy initiatives and vote against government Bills that it did not agree with.”

“UnitedFuture is committed to continue fighting for a better deal for future generations, through a fairer economy, future proofed environment and stronger communities.” Confirmed Mr Light.

“We have bold policies that we will continue to champion like Income Sharing, FlexiSuper and Free Tertiary Education. We’ve moved the government’s position on drugs to view them more as a health issue but we’re not finished.”

“We need take practical action to protect and restore our environment, including funding innovation and research.”

“UnitedFuture is one of the few parties to have consistently called to raise the refugee quota and provide more support for our newest citizens (refugees and migrants alike).” Concluded Mr Light.

The party will announce its final candidate list next week.
