The main issue behind this, leads probably to an argument on whether New Zealand should become a Republic or not. This is because the two issues, along with changing the National Anthem, are interlinked.
The flag represents the Union Jack and our ties to the United Kingdom, but also, the Southern Cross which represents our heritage in the Southern Hemisphere. Im not certain what the blue background stands for, but it may represent the Southern Ocean (similarities with the Australian flag).
My ideal National flag would include the kiwi, the Crown Insignia on some of the older Post Offices, and above all, the Silver Fern leaf. Perhaps we can also change the colour from Blue to maybe Black - to go with the Silver Fern leaf.
Our ties to the United Kingdom are fading, so we no longer need the Union Jack on our Flag.
