BLOG: Organ Donations

Have you given any thought to becoming an organ donor?
Have you ever discussed your views with your nearest and dearest?
There are two ways to be a donor. One is to be a live donor, giving one kidney or part of your liver.
The second is under more tragic circumstances, which requires the donor to be on a life-support machine where it has been determined that turning off the machine is the only option.

In those situations it is your family who ultimately get to decide if they will allow your organs to be harvested for use in needy recipients.

It is clear that when a family is unclear what your wishes are, they will more than likely say no.

In NZ we have a very low rate of donation which leaves those on waiting lists with pretty grim options.

I think the government should invest more in public education on this matter as it seems that our best chance of getting donor rates up is to have families discussing the matter openly before a crisis occurs.

What do you think could be done to improve donor rates? Read the full text of this blog post.

I must admit I have not thought about donating bits of me. The idea is quite foreign because I was born in an era where such technology didn't exist (? ) But then to donate an organ could defineitely help someone else.

I think a documentary of high calibre (Not done by our "favourite" dimwits) would be a good place to start. In terms of public awareness I do think you are on the right track.I think it comes down to benefits-how will I benefit giving someone a part of my body. Will the receipent be happy to accept?

We sure do live in amazing times eh?

I'm an organ donor (on my drivers licence) and have been since I got my learners licence. For me it's something that I've always thought was an easy choice - if I'm gone and someone else can gain from my organs, then why not !?

I've spoken to a few people about it, and most people don't seem to have considered it.

Maybe a good public education program would be a good idea !
