Dunne – 1080 operations too ‘inhouse’

UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne says his party remains unmoved in its opposition to aerial 1080 despite the Department of Conservation’s latest attempt at assuring the public otherwise.

“What DoC, regional councils and the Animal Health Board fail to understand is that the public of New Zealand will never trust assertions over the effectiveness of aerial 1080 while the whole regime remains so ‘inhouse’,” said Mr Dunne.

“DoC, regional councils, the AHB, and their contractors are carrying out poisoning operations with little to no public accountability.

1080 was the first product that ERMA re-assessed due to the public interest in the product. With no disrespect to Rob Forlong & his devoted colleagues @ ERMA it would have made considerable sense to at least trial bait stations & the like in several areas to test the efficacy of such. If we can put the likes of 'cat nip' or whatever it is in dry cat food then there must be 'something' that we can put in 1080 that will draw possums to the bait stations to eat.

Perhaps a recommendation to ERMA & DOC to to just that could be 1 way of solving the issue of do we actually need the 'cross-contamination' that comes with indiscriminate aerial application of 1080. There are too many species being caught in the crossfire and 'the civilian casualty' count on such species is not on!
