Dunne: UF now crucial post-election

John Key’s decisions to rule out both Winston Peters and Sir Roger Douglas from Ministerial consideration should he lead the next government puts UnitedFuture in a critical position, says leader Peter Dunne.

“Mr Key is going to need partners after the next election if he is going to form a government.

“He has effectively ruled out New Zealand First, and now seems to be raising doubts about Act as well; the Maori Party or the Greens are unlikely to do a deal with National; and the Progressives are long since spoken for, all of which leaves UnitedFuture in clear air,” he says.

Mr Dunne says UnitedFuture’s credentials as a genuine centre party and a reliable partner for successive governments are unchallengeable.

“We have supported both Labour-led and National-led governments reliably, and without scandal, with an unerring focus on keeping them honest and moderating their excesses, without pandering to the extreme ends of the political spectrum.

“We are ready to play that role once more in the interests of good and stable government, and ensuring that the interests of mainstream New Zealand families are represented at the government table,” he says.

This post actually arose an idea i had not previously thought of...out of all the parties in New Zealand politics there is only one group which has not featured in media scandal: and i would have to say that it is United Future.

An interesting thought

We don't really have far right white supremacists or too many far left Communists in NZ. We have everyone voting for 'the centre' but they attempt that through the 2 old party's they & their mum's & dad's voted for (ie) Labour & National. So why don't we get the government we really want? Why do we have several smaller parties as self interest groups attempting to keep their heads above water as petty self interest groups? The old party's with their agendas & ideology's can't deliver what the general public want. The public must learn that the centre, the road that leads to life is right smack in the centre. As the old saying goes 'broad is the road that leads to destruction'. We have this current situation as NZ is yet to learn from its voting mistakes, that it leans to neither the far or mid left or the far or mid right! What NZ needs to realise is that there is 1 centre part that has tried to show the way towards implementing a better form of democracy by giving the public all that is good that they are asking for.. & have been asking for for ages - like business tax cuts & taxation reforms. What we see happening in the Press with Winston Peters, Rodney Hide & the .likes of the leaders of other party's is a few self interest group attempting to get more votes sent their way rather than achieve what is best for the country. Democracy is about getting the best deal for the people - not the political party's at the expense of anyone that might get in the way & that could help the actual party's grappling for votes! What we see in the Press leading in to this election is not what the people want! It is the opposite of allowing due process to find the righteous conclusions. It's about grabbing a vote or 3 no matter 'how' you can!

Good points !!

I think the point that UnitedFuture is "ready to play that role once more in the interests of good and stable government, and ensuring that the interests of mainstream New Zealand families are represented at the government table" sums up UnitedFuture's goals in past and future parliaments perfectly !

A vote for UnitedFuture is a vote for stable govement - no matter who is in power.

Interesting that Integrity is a keyword this election. And rightly so. If anyone plans to go into politics like myself, then we better make sure we are clean in our dealings with public money, private donations and public office.

The demise of one party should be a serious lesson in futility.- I feel sorry for Winston Peters because he has shot his own foot.

Maybe UnitedFuture as a party is a prophetic statement about the kind of politics that is emerging for our country's future?

I was thinking the same thing myself Simon.

You have some good points mcinnes. People wanted MMP, so use it to your full voting power! Regardless of what major party is voted in, UnitedFuture needs to be there to represent and act for the mainstream, and to reign in extreme policies like it did this term. (e.g. the anti-smacking amendment)

Although UF might be in a sweeter spot with the unfortunate demise of Mr Peters, I really couldn't imagine a stable government without it's input.
