United Future Releases Family Policy

UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne has released the party's Family policy.

Speaking this afternoon at the Forum on the Family conference, Mr Dunne reiterated UnitedFuture's strong commitment to the family as the core of New Zealand society.

"We salute New Zealand families for the awesome task they perform, and we congratulate our parents for their dedication, and their commitment to being the best they can be.

"When families function well, the country functions well - and you cannot go beyond that.

"We have long believed that the primary role of any government is to promote policies which are good for families.

"At the same time, we recognise that families come in many shapes and sizes, and a one size fits all approach will not work.

"Every family deserves our respect, support and encouragement to become more resilient, to get on with their lives the way they want to.

"We need to devote more attention to family function, and to supporting families to provide a loving and nurturing environment for their children, whatever their circumstances.

Great policies to support a positive central idea - families are the glue that keeps society together. We are all part of one in some shape or form. Investing time and money back into families and children is investing in our country's future.

The thought of offering marriage and relationship services is a good one. This could be a positive step towards helping couples shape their lives together.

Great to see supporting the family is still at the heart of United Future's thrust.

I particularly like the promotion of the caregiver's allowance, which would be a supportive measure to alleviate the huge pressure caring for someone with a disability places on a family.

If we asked New Zealanders 'what is the most important thing in your life?' I suspect the answer for 99.9% would be 'my family'.

Why then shouldn't government put the family at the heart of everything it does? United Future have long held this approach and long may it continue.

Pleased to see the diversity of families being recognised in UF policy too!!

I am a single man 48 years old and I often babysit for my best of friends who have 3 children- for them to be able to have an evening off on their own means much to me. Having a family centred policy is so beneficial because some parents can hire their friends for an evening off. I actually live for the moment when my best friend asks me to look after his three children so he can go out for an evening with his wife.

Thats my commitment to marriage as a single man.

Congratulations United Future on a great Families Policy. I note also that lobby group Parents Choice www.parentschoice08.blogspot.com has also endorsed the party's policy. Well done!
