BLOG: Sneak Preview for Election Next Year

Don’t you love “reality checks?”

I just had a sneak preview for next year’s election. Last week I attended a forum of politicians addressing 7th form students at a well known boys high school in Auckland and there were 5 political parties represented on the panel. You may be thinking that next year’s race might be looking interesting, but based on what I saw, I’d recommend you hold on to your seats….you might just fall off them with boredom.

Here’s my take on what was said:

The National party person - “My wallet is king and my party is royalty and all minor parties are court jesters”,
The Labour person - “We’ve been spending millions on loads of government programmes – isn’t it great?”,
The Greens guy - “Just feel our vibe on climate change – (and don’t worry about other details)”.
The NZ First person - “It’s a scary world out there and we’d like to highlight all your possible fears”
The Act guy – […he didn’t turn up. Even though this event was held in his electorate…for which he fought tooth and nail…but what’s a few votes from a few sons of a few potentially influential constituents?]... Read the full text of this blog post.

The most illuminating part of the forum for me was the comment by the National MP present on how school zoning had changed the audience at Auckland Grammar from a predominantly mono-ethnic one a few years ago to a far more multi ethnic one today. "What a pity," he then added to gasps of surprise all round. Now we know why he lost to Rodney Hide!

People worry about lower socio-economic youth being led into crime & disarray by gangs & the like. Thank God Peter Dunne attempted to show these hopefully motivated, aspiring young men that decency, common sense & leadership are still available from among our political leaders as traits to emulate.

From the report I just read It sounds like if we let the 'other' MP's present do their thing without Dunne's 'different' & encouraging input on the day, that for these students we'd be setting our society up to be led by callous, cold, selfish twerps who don't give a hoot about anything other than themselves. What a great way such are showing help to our youth & our nations future (not!)

I had temporarily forgotten about that race-based comment Peter! I am still trying to figure out whether he got his tang toungled or if he wanted to see what offending a group of 7th formers looks like.

Good comments Ian.
You are right to point out that Peter was 'different' on the day. You'd be surprised at how once the rhetoric of left/right starts flying around at these forums, highlighting the centrist political position all-of-a-sudden sounds amazingly (dare I say it!) common sense!
