Dunne: serious defaulters’ student loans can be recalled

Revenue Minister Peter Dunne today welcomed new legislation allowing the student loans of serious defaulters to be recalled in full.
Speaking as the Student Loan Scheme Bill was passed in Parliament this evening, Mr Dunne said the vast majority of domestic based student loan borrowers met their loan requirements and had no reason to be concerned.
“There are, however, some individuals who clearly do not comply with their obligation to repay their loans. This bill allows Inland Revenue to recall those loans in full, with outstanding interest and penalties,” Mr Dunne said.
“This is not a harsh move. It is about fair and appropriate real world consequences of the same sort you would face if you continued to remain in serious default on your mortgage.
“It is a last option for dealing with those who consistently renege on their repayment responsibilities. It would only be used when all reasonable efforts to have the individual concerned meet their obligations have failed,” he said.
The first cases for recall will involve a number of borrowers under the overseas borrowers pilot scheme currently underway in Australia.
Mr Dunne said, however, that the Student Loan Scheme Bill was “more carrot than stick”... Read the full text of this article.

I guess this might well eventually apply to my son who has moved to Sydney to work and has a rather large student loan. Unless of course he can secure a pay rise that will enable him to save enough to start repaying his loan he may well be hunted down.
What I like about the plan is that the "students" only have to pay back what they have borrowed plus any interest on overdue or unpaid amounts.
Unlike child support whereby the paying parent (usually the father) often has to pay child support, NOT on a taxable income but an income that has been inflated by an Admin Review officer.
Even the proof of a tax return, proof that there is no additional income does not change the determination and although there is legislation that says that a "square up" or "reconciliation" must be done at the end of the financial year, this apparantly, according to the wise old Admin Review officer does not apply to assessed incomes only estimated ones.
Well when I was last in school about 35 years ago and when I last looked at my theasaurus yesterday assessed and estimate were far more parallel in meaning than assess/estimate and ACTUAL (referring to income)
If you're a student with a loan and you happen to end up liable to pay child support here in NZ, my advise is move as far away as you can. Once the IRD get their claws into someone who will pay that is what you will continue to do. PAY, PAY, PAY.
If you are easy to find and don't try and hide they will seek you out and torment you. Far easier to do that than try and find the delinquant ones who require a bit of effort.
Once they find you, you will feel as if you have a red dot on your person, you will be a target.

If you are easy to find, don't try to hide their will find you and torture you. The more easily than try to find delinquant those who need a little work.
