Good afternoon.
It is a pleasure to be here to speak to you in the midst of the Rugby World Cup, in an atmosphere of optimism and anticipation – and I say that rather boldly given that I wrote this speech before the weekend’s All Blacks’ quarterfinal against Argentina!
We are also – as you would be well aware – about to enter a short, sharp and no doubt frantic election campaign, beginning, one would hope, the day after Richie McCaw hoists the Webb Ellis Cup.
We can only but dream!
At a more prosaic level, occasions such as this one today are important events in the lead-up to an election.
They are about the contest of ideas and philosophies and alternative views on how best to drive New Zealand forward.
That is what politics should be!
