BLOG:

Following the death of Sir Edmund Hillary, much thought is being given to the best way to commemorate the life of this unique and remarkable New Zealander. What made him so was the extent to which we all saw him as encapsulating the best of Kiwi values. Well, let me link two ideas together. Over the past few years I have been raising the issue of what an appropriate National Day for our country should be. Amongst the various suggestions made to me, has been the persistent suggestion that May 29th - the day Sir Edmund conquered Mt Everest in 1953 - should be our National Day. So, is it now time to revive this idea as the most appropriate way to honour the life of Sir Edmund Hillary? Read the full text of this blog post.

Sir Ed: yes I believe this would be a very good idea-that is to have a national day for Sir Ed. I also think we should raise the profile of his charity work-he was inspiring and so by raising the profile we all would learn two important things in life. 1. Life is short-don't waste it. 2.Give a bit more than normal it makes everyone touched special, their self-esteem woken up and it makes us think twice about self interest.

I had a constituent send me this idea as a way of spending a Sir Ed day ... there are certainly some interesting ideas floating round!

"Achievers Day"
This will get away away from thrm the Hero aspect wich narrows the field.
We should be venerating NZ'ers who have brought NZ to the world's notice with their achievements in such things as, writing, political, sporting, social as well as overcoming supposedly insummountable odds.

This has been going on since the day Sir Edmund Hillary died, in our newspapers, our radio and TV.
Has anyone considered what Sir Ed would have wanted instead of what everyone else wants?
For now let this humble man rest in peace.
