BLOG: HPV Vaccine

The government has recently announced that they will spend $177 million on providing a five year vaccination programme for girls and young women against two types of sexually transmitted viruses linked to the majority of cervical cancers that currently kill 60 NZ women a year. Like all vaccinations programmes in NZ, participation will be voluntary.

There have been some howls from certain quarters that this will encourage sexual promiscuity among teenagers. On this matter I’d like to make three points.

1. Sorry … wake up … the proverbial horse sadly bolted years ago.
2. This vaccination only covers a few HPV strains and so all the warning messages remain essential. Most sexually transmitted infections are asymptomatic (you don’t know you have them).
3. The innocent are not automatically safe. The monogamous young person who marries someone with an infection will find marriage no protection, and more than 100 babies were born infected with a sexually transmitted disease last year here in NZ.

I think you made some good points here Judy and worth thinking about. One other issue that I think needs debate is how we choose to adopt new vaccines in this country. There are some scientific considerations that seem to get swept under the carpet at times that we really must talk about. This particular vaccine is new and has not been tested for its long term safety and efficacy (ie 10 years and more). Also, we must recognise that all vaccines work only with a certain proportion of the population. Unfortunately, people often think that just because they have had the vaccine they are "safe." Unfortunately, 2 or 5 or 10% are not safe at all. What level of failure of vaccine are we prepared to accept?
Only recently we adopted the Meningococcal vaccine when infection rates were already on the decline , without long term safety or efficacy data and at tremendous cost, and have now found it has had only minimal effect. There are some important lessons to learn here.

John, one of the innovations that Medicines New Zealand will introduce is that the procurement of vaccines will now come under Pharmac, which in turn will mean the more rigorous clinical assessment that you imply is required.

I'm looking for a party worthy of my families vote and it is important issues like the areas of health & vaccinations that will help make the decision..

Do United Fsupport mandatory vaccinations?
so United F supports this $177 mill spend ?

UnitedFuture supports this vaccination programme for the reasons set out in the original blog. While our overwhelming preference would be for all young women in the target range to be vaccinated, we respect the right of parents to decline the opportunity for reasons of conscience.
