BLOG: Playing your part

At a recent candidate forum, in the final wind-up comments Green M.P. Meteria Turei made an interesting plea ... she asked people to do 2 things
1) to party vote Green
2) to tell others how they were voting

It was her second request that got me thinking. In NZ we have always been coy about being open about our political leanings but I think that Meteria is right about calling on supporters of minor parties to be more up-front about that support. Word of mouth advertising is powerful.

I think there is a new openness developing in NZ and I think MMP has helped drive this new openness.

SO if you are prepared to vote strategically and to give UnitedFuture your PARTY VOTE ... then how about telling others.

Meteria finished her speech with an interesting thought ... she told the audience that if they weren't prepared to vote Green, then she urged them to give their party vote to another Minor party so that MMP remained strong. Read the full text of this blog post.

I think Judy has a good point about referring to our own voting strategy. Also if you are active in a party, talk about it in a non threatening way and you can really see people starting to think even if they don't want to share their own views. At a recent evening function I was asked more than once what I'd been doing during the day. So I said I'd been out delivering election leaflets. That led to some very interesting conversations! Also when people know you belong to a party and you say that while you are giving your party vote to United Future but you may give your electorate vote elsewhere you realize many people still haven't grasped that as a strategic option.

I had the same conversation the other day with my colleague and i explained that I am voting for party and electorate thats got the UnitedFuture name.

I also explained that my votes would be done because of the strategy to see a strength added to a minor party.

Jim Anderton doesn't need to have a phoney website where most of the contributers are United Future list party members who ask questions then answer them themselves.
