It is time for a Government-backed health inquiry into the impact of the painted apple moth spraying programme on the people of West Auckland, United Future’s environment and conservation spokesman Larry Baldock said today.
He said an Auckland University study showing a rise in stomach, breathing and neurological problems among residents in the spray zone simply reinforced his earlier calls for an inquiry.
“The Government has let the people down on this issue. Genuine health concerns are being swept under the carpet.
“In one way or another, this campaign is impacting on the lives of upwards of 160,000 Aucklanders, and they need to have their very real concerns listened to,” Mr Baldock said.
“The chemicals being used are safe on their own, but it is obvious that they are causing a reaction among some people when they are exposed to them in large amounts.
“Fly spray is recommended as safe but no one recommends that you take a bath in it,” he said.
