Family oriented policies. To promote an environment within our country that embraces, supports and enhances family life across our diverse cultural and socio-economic groups. We will pursue polices that recognise the contribution families make to ensuring economic harmony, low crime and excellence in education, health and other social areas.
Education is the Key to Our Future. We believe every New Zealander has the right to receive access to the best education in the world, from pre-school to tertiary education. We will develop and support policies to achieve that objective.
Access to Health Care is a Right. All New Zealanders have the right to expect the provision of comprehensive health care that will meet their needs, whatever the circumstances. We will work to ensure all health services can do this.
Welfare should offer a Fresh Chance. All New Zealanders have the right to a public social welfare system that supports them through the difficult stages in their lives in a fair and compassionate way. Welfare should offer people a second chance. United Future does not accept welfare should be a way of life, but equally recognises the vast majority of beneficiaries are on welfare through no fault of their own, so therefore deserve a basic allowance from the state during difficult periods. United Future also supports universal, publicly provided superannuation for retired people.
Economic Policy must Promote Sustainable Growth. New Zealanders must have the right to live in a society which maximises opportunity for economic security and personal prosperity. To achieve this, we expect people to work hard and productively in their chosen careers and meet their legal, taxation and financial obligations. We equally expect employers to honour the law and display a strong sense of corporate ethics and responsibility.
Communities must be safe and secure. All New Zealanders have the right to live in safe and secure communities, where justice recognises every individual as an equal and balances punitive and rehabilitative needs.
Government must be Accountable for its Actions. We believe governments must accept responsibility for their actions. Our proposed Social Responsibility Bill will achieve this in a transparent way.
