Finding Futures
Communities Managing and Co-ordinating their Welfare Issues

United Future supports a ‘for community by community approach’ to regional welfare. Each geographical and cultural community within New Zealand has varying needs. The government cannot make blanket proclamations for the entire country but must enable each community to examine its own unemployment and welfare situation.

Voluntary Sector

United Future supports the vital role that volunteer and community agencies play in our society. These agencies often have the expertise, networks and strong community focus to deliver services most effectively, as the Royal Commission on Social Policy found.

United Future Will:

Ensure any proven, volunteer or quasi-volunteer agency or group that can show their work is cost effective for their community is adequately funded.

Focus on developing a supportive and mutually beneficial partnership between government and community and voluntary agencies.

Increase personal tax rebate on donations to charitable organisations from $500 to $5000.

Require government departments to adopt a specific strategy for investing in the community and voluntary sector.

Seek to establish a participatory style of government by Ensuring voluntary agencies are kept up to date with policies of government departments. Working to include diverse cultural groups in the decision making process. Foster networks for voluntary groups to link into policy development by government departments.

Establish a code of practice for community and voluntary agencies.

Explore effective means of encouraging greater social participation in voluntary organisations.

Establish a national centre to identify and resource umbrella, national and networking groups.

Require local councils to provide a statement every three years outlining council objectives towards local groups.
