At only 48 Peter is one of Parliament's most respected MP's. His intelligent calm common-sense is a much sought-after quality in Parliament. He is married to Jennifer and they have two teenage sons, James and Alastair.

|
Educated at St Bede's College, Christchurch and completing an MA Hons in Political Science (Canterbury) prior to entering Parliament, Peter was with the Department of Trade and Industry 1977-78, Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council 1978-84. He entered Parliament in 1984 as the Member for Ohariu (later Ohariu-Belmont) and has retained the seat with one of the largest margins in the country since.

His experience at a Ministerial level is proven, his integrity and honesty is noted amongst MP's from both sides of the House. His goal is to achieve more recognition of the needs of middle New Zealand families.

When gifted with free time, Peter enjoys reading, following sport and sailing.
