Electoral System

United Future:
  • believes that the electoral system is ultimately the property of the New Zealand people

  • considers therefore that arising out of the MMP Review Select Committee's report there ought to be another binding referendum on MMP and the number of Members of Parliament so that New Zealanders can have their say

  • believes that voters ought to be able to change the order of candidates on a party list when they vote, so that party lists can be more reflective of public opinion

  • oppose legislation requiring electorate MPs to leave Parliament if they resign from the parties for whom they were elected, believing instead that that is a decision for voters to make, not political parties

  • oppose State funding of political parties.
