UNITED FUTURE'S STANCE ON GENETIC MODIFICATION

United Future's position is as follows:

"We support an extremely cautious approach to GE."

  • Indeed we feel that the original Government decisons following the Royal Commission's Report were at the "outer limit of acceptability."
"We support the current moratorium."
  • The Government imposed it to allow it time to make major policy decisions following the Royal Commission's Report.
"We say that the moratorium should not be lifted until the Government is satisfied that the appropriate regulatory policy is in place."
  • If by the second half of 2003 it is clear that the Government cannot meet its self-imposed October 2003 deadline, United Future would have no hesitation in supporting an extension of the moratorium until such time as the Government's policy work has been completed.
