Young New Zealanders is United Future New Zealand's policy statement for young people aged 11-20. There is no escaping the fact that many young people are disadvantaged, insecure and confused. United is committed to breaking the cycle of disadvantage by investing in the young adolescent and working with them to develop a strong sense of self-responsibility, family and community.

Growing Up, Growing Wise: Adolescent Education

Schools have a great part to play in the growth of teenagers. Curricula should include programmes dealing with all aspects of health and physical well-being, including relationship and values education, sex education, self awareness coping with family life and parental break-up and skills for personal security.

UNITED FUTURE WILL

  • Fund health clinics in schools. Medical and counselling professionals will be available to assess and support young people in need.
  • Fund in-school provision of career and educational advice and training in job-seeking and job-keeping skills.
  • Ensure access to further education and training.
  • Provide the resources to ensure that those with special needs and disabilities can reach their full potential.
  • Institute a record of achievement programme. Students will receive a record at the end of Year 8 (Form 2) and when they leave school. This record will cover their academic, sporting, cultural and personal achievements as well as record credits in the qualifications framework.
  • Institute a civics education programme in schools. The programme will focus on developing young people's knowledge about adult life, including their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
